No Alarms

Their latest single The Landing, which came out earlier this month, is of quite different root-stock to previous material of theirs, which typically has been more indie-rock earthed.

A softly brushed ballad is threaded through a haze of synth and electronica to give the song a softwave texturing through which percussion and guitar lay subdued and thereby having something of a forlorn drifting melancholia that minds of former lovers parting.

In many ways my sense of the track, which lays in absolute contrast to the intentions by the  songwriter where the moment is intended to evoke the sense of positivity of landing on ones feet, elation and pure joy, demonstrates precisely just how subjective music is for each listener.

Dinosaur 94 – Elephant Dreams – Single Review

The Scottish alt-rock quintet, Dinosaur 94, released the single Elephant Dreams yesterday.

Dinosaur 94

Dinosaur 94

Having only come to fruition roughly a year ago Dinosaur 94 are, understandably, still honing their core sound with each of the handful of songs I have been able to hear having a slightly different flavour. References of fuzzy framework and merseybeat, along side the new track Elephant Dream – which is of more punchy bluesy new wave root-stock that, inevitably, as longer stay readers will anticipate is also my preference – compounded by a throbbing bass which introduces the listener to the almost five and a half minutes composition.

I look forward to hearing more by Dinosaur 94 who are self-evidently a talented group of song songwriters and musicians.

Evelyn Cools – Here’s To You – Audio

It has been a couple of years since the US based alt-folk creator Evelyn Cools last featured.

Evelyn Cools - Here's To You

Evelyn Cools

When last featured the Belgian singer songwriter was based in England and now moved to the USA and returning with a slightly different feel, laid to a more melancholic backdrop set to a fragile architecture which affords brighter spotlight to the singular and tender vocal.

Here’s To You, released on the 29th of May is one of a series of singles scheduled for release.

CWM – Raised As Wolves – Single Review

CWM is a relatively new English dark-rock quartet.

CWM

CWM

Only a couple of songs are around, both of fairly dark outline though one, Icebreaker, is punchier than other, the more recent Raised As Wolves, which has a more nuanced texturing to it affording the quartet to shine as creative songwriters due to its multitudes of layers that float through the room as it casts an ethereal dreamy presence towards which the listener finds themselves vainly reaching out to embrace the curling echoes as they drift past.

It is difficult to comprehend CWM have only recently got together and on the basis of the two tracks, particularly, to my mind, the latter, will find many more people speaking at least one word of Welsh more than they knew in the past – though to be fair – having not asked about the intended pronunciation, perhaps each individual letter stands on its own.

Victory Lap – The Afterlife – Single Review

Victory Lap is the indie-dance project of Alex Badham from Australia.

Victory Lap

Victory Lap

With considerable experience as both a musician and music video director, the début single of the solo project – The Afterlife ( which came out on the 23rd and available on bandcamp) – evidences of a songwriter and arranger who knows one end of a song from the other.

Multilayered instrumentation, synth and percussion are moulded in to exotic shapes and – rather than becoming overly complex – fold themselves around the vocal – giving the listener a sound in which they step on to the dance-floor and sway with the funky beat, or lean back and allow the dreamy washes to flush through the mind.
